Sunday Offerings

September 2010 recipient

BarakatThis organization is all about the education of women and girls in Afghanistan, India, and Pakistan.

Literacy classes in Afghanistan using the syllabus from the Ministry of Education are conducted in homes when parents do not want their girls to attend co-ed schools. Two elementary schools are run by Barakat with classes running in shifts with the boys and girls attending at different times.

Raising awareness of human rights is central to Barakat with teachers receiving training according to the UN’s Declaration of Human Rights. In India, schooling is provided for poor children who would otherwise be sent to work in their parents’ trades.

There are two schools in Bhadohi, the carpet making capital of India. In Pakistan there are three schools as well as an evening school for girls. Barakat partners with the UUSC.
