Sunday Offerings

Central Asia Institute
April 2010 recipient

Central Asia InstituteIt has been two years since we first supported Greg Mortenson’s organization, Central Asia Institute, which at the time had built 65 schools in the remote mountain villages of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Today the count is at 131 fully- or partially-funded schools, 1200 fully- or partially-supported teachers and 58,000 students educated, including
40,000 girls. Every project is locally initiated by tribal elders and the work is performed by the villagers themselves. Women’s education, public health, and conservation are priorities.

Greg believes that there is no more effective way to combat terrorism and intolerance than by educating girls. He serves as an unofficial adviser to the Pentagon and the military’s top brass, and sets up meetings between the military leaders and tribal elders.

His story is told in his autobiographies, Three Cups of Tea and Stones into Schools which are available in our EUUC Bookstore.

The Sunday Offering Committee selects the Central Asia Institute for April.
