Coming of Age Class: Grade 8

When do they meet?

The Coming of Age class meets from 10:30 a.m. to noon on most Sundays.  On non-meeting days youth are encouraged to attend service or assist in RE classes. Those who are enrolled receive schedules, and those 8th and 9th graders who are not enrolled attend the Fireworks class at 11 a.m. in RE-1.

What do they learn?

The most important aspect of Coming of Age is the opportunity to learn about themselves. Through research, mentorship, social action, and reflection these youth prepare for adolescence. Their year culminates in a wilderness retreat, a special dinner, a Coming of Age service, and an official welcome from the Youth Group. These 8th graders accomplish something that many of us adult UUs have never done formally—they look within themselves and identify their own personal beliefs. These youth will spend their year learning about Unitarian Universalism, as well as important and interesting people in our faith.

Coming of Age Service

The Coming of Age Service in May is the culmination of many months of thought, action, and learning for our 8th graders. These youth plan and present the service to share their accomplishments and experiences in the class. This is an important passage for them and the congregation. Please attend one of these services and welcome these smart, funny, and talented young people into the larger fellowship of the congregation. Read the text of the Coming of Age Service, including the youth credos.
