And Tango Makes ThreeThis beautifully illustrated picture book tells us a true story about two penguins in the New York Central Park Zoo. Silo and Roy chose one another as life partners—even though they are both males. After many years of striving to hatch an egg like the many other penguin couples around them, the zookeeper gave them a fertile egg to hatch.
Homeless Bird is the modern day story of a rural Indian girl whose parents are too poor to feed her. To save money, Koly’s parents arrange a marriage to a young sickly boy, against her wishes. In short order, however, her life takes an unexpected turn. Through adversity, Koly finds her own strength and creates an exceptional future.
Environmental values are woven throughout this children’s novel. A housing development forces a group of animals out of the woods. As they travel to the exulted nature preserve, they run across dangers placed there by humans—a fox hunt, a busy highway, the pesticides of farmers’ fields, and dangerous dogs.
The animal friends stick together to follow their dream to a promised land. Environmental values such as conservation, organic farming, and preserving land for animal habitat are stressed as much as loyalty to friends, forgiveness, and love.
