Moderating an Email Discussion List
What is a moderator?
The moderator of discussion list is the person who manages the list. The moderator invites people to join and ensures that everyone who ought to be part of the communication circle has been invited to join.
If someone outside the group posts a message to the list, it will come to the moderator who approves or denies the posting. This eliminates spam from outsiders. To get to the panel where you approve or deny requests, use this link, but replace ListName with the name of your list: http://discussion.euuc.org/admindb.cgi/ListName-euuc.org
So, the moderator has two roles: managing the membership and vetting messages from outside. The following instructions tell you how to
- set up a new discussion list
- help people join a list
- help people remove themselves from a list
- help people recover their passwords and set their options
- see who's on the list
- approve messages from people outside the group
Annual list clean-up
Once a year you should look at the list of members, and if there are any that should be removed, send those email addresses to the Discussion List Coordinator with a request to have those people removed.
