This Week at EUUC

December 2 , 2010 - December 12, 2010

Upon Reflection -
"Knowing about is helpful for practical purposes. On that level, we cannot do without it. When it is the predominant modality in relationships, however, it becomes very limiting, even destructive. Thoughts and concepts create an artificial barrier, a separation between human beings. Your interactions are then not rooted in Being, but become mind-based. Without the conceptual barriers, love is naturally present in all human interactions.”
Eckhart Tolle

Mitten Tree and NEW Shoebox/Totes
for the Interfaith Family Shelter —
December 5 during the service

We will have a ‘Decorate the Mitten Tree’ time during the service.  As the children and youth are not in the service this week, they are invited to stop in the sanctuary before or after the services to place their warm woollies on the mitten tree. Warm woollies can be added to the tree at any time during the following three weeks.

The warm woollies will be ADDED TO a NEW outreach project happening on December 19 – where the children will pack boxes or totes with a wide variety of little gifts – health and hygiene items – snacks etc. Please see details in the upcoming CommUUnicator newsletter or pick up a FLYER from the LRE table in the Narthex.

Remember to bring items for the Shoeboxes/Totebags for Shelters Project. For a complete list of items needed, pick up a flyer from the LRE table in the Narthex.

This is a Lifespan Religious Education/Social Concerns collaboration – details under construction.

December Offering Recipient

Neighbors in Need

This program is a local partnership of five churches, including EUUC, to assist the needy. Saturday breakfasts are served; shower vouchers and haircuts are provided. Donated clothing and food assistance is given. About 125 people are served each week. Cold weather shelter in the winter is provided for the local homeless at seven partner churches (including EUUC.) The churches serve dinner, breakfast and a bag lunch. Bus tickets had previously been provided but have recently been discontinued due to the lack of funds. This partnership is dependent on the donations of the partner congregations. For more information contact Merrie Emmons.

News and Events

Audacious Parking Plan —

Could it Work? As second service attendance swells, we’re almost out of parking. Before we clear land for parking or start a volunteer-intensive shuttle system, maybe there’s a way to easily use our offsite parking lot. Here’s the plan: During December, the offsite parking lot located a block east of EUUC on 224th, will be open for ridesharing. If you’re coming to second service, swing through the lot between 10:30 and 10:55 and find a ride with someone you know. For the trip back, ride with a friend or talk to the Welcome Desk volunteer about transportation. Cars in the offsite lot need to be moved by 1 p.m. so that we can lock the lot. It’s that easy. If you have mobility issues, children in car seats, or any other reason to go straight to the main parking lot, please do so. During the month we’ll assess how the plan is working, so feedback would be appreciated. Kyle.Gillis@euuc.org Membership Co-Chair

Cold Weather Shelter

Volunteers needed to staff shelter every cold Tuesday night

Please volunteer to help with the cold-weather shelter. It will be open at Jeremiah Center every night the temperature drops below 33 degrees. EUUC is responsible for Tuesday nights. Please stop by the Social Concerns table to find out how you can help.

Fair Trade Market Opens Dec 5th!

The colorful and well crafted items will capture your attention right away. The hand bags from India are beautiful and illustrate a good fair trade story. The artisans have been empowered without having Western values imposed on them, and these women have been able to become respected, independent, decision makers in their community. Carefully move the wooden "singing stick" around the high quality singing bowls and listen and feel the sustained ringing, note the increasing volume and the emergence of the lovely harmonic tones. You may just want one. And yes, there are good choices once again for chocolate and coffee...

Photo Directories Available This Sunday

Photo directories for Members and Friends will be available this Sunday at the Welcome Desk. If you had your picture taken by Olan Mills, a free copy has been reserved for you. If you did not have your picture taken, a copy can be purchased for $5.

Improving the Lives of Women -- Globally and Locally

Monday, December 6, 7 to 9 p.m

Advocates for Women, a new EUUC group, was born after the Adult RE Book Nook class read Half the Sky. Nicholas Kristof and Cheryl WuDunn authored this book about the most serious issues facing women and girls, yet their book left us feeling hopeful and inspired to make a difference, to improve the lives of females suffering injustice. We welcome you to join us at our meeting where we will select a charitable organization and decide how we want to support their work.

SPECIAL FOOD DRIVE!!! - Now through December 16

Please help five local Edmonds School District families-in-need over the two-week long Winter Break by donating breakfast and lunch items to children enrolled in the Free and Reduced School Lunch Program. These families struggle to provide the meals at home during the break. Suggested donation items include tortillas, refried beans, mac and cheese, soups, crackers, cereal, pop tarts, fruit cups, tuna, yogurt, deli meat, and lettuce. Drop non-perishable food off at the Campbell's Soup Can next to the coat rack near the door. To donate fresh produce or perishable items, please contact Julie Taylor.

Northsound Jazz Concert

December 17, 8 p.m., Chapman Hall

Northsound Jazz is a group of 17 jazz enthusiasts that meets several times a month and include our own Mark Press. The Big Band sound will include favorites and a seasonal twist sure to please.

Special Art Project at Cedar Valley School

Thanks to a proposal by an EUUC member, the Edmonds Arts Festival has awarded a grant to create interior murals at Cedar Valley School. The artist, Andrew Morrison, needs volunteers to help him and students with this project, in early December. Contact Alice Owen if you can help.

Got (too much) Stuff?

The Social Justice Committees ask that our collective Carbon Reduction efforts now move to "Consumerism." Yes, we do need to consume - but, by reducing car trips; eliminating unnecessary purchases; and making thoughtful purchases, we do reduce our carbon footprint. We can ask ourselves: "Do I really need this? Will this gift last a long time? Can I do a lot in just one trip? Could I walk instead?" Please check the Carbon Footprint table display in the LRE Foyer for suggestions on steps you can take to reduce your footprint. And don't forget to keep finding energy reduction actions around the home!
