Inspired by a true story, Osama was the first entirely Afghan film shot after the 2001 fall of the Taliban. Forbidden to work or leave her home without a male companion, yet left without male family members due to the wars, a desperate Afghan mother sends her 12-year old daughter out to work, disguised as a boy. Thus begins a terrifying and confusing journey as the girl (now called Osama) struggles to conceal her identity when she is pulled into a Taliban school and military training.
