Our Moral Imperative

Global Warming? Yes, we know the facts, yes we've changed our light bulbs. But how much do we look beyond our own home and comfort level? Do you know what it means to other people of the world? Do you feel responsibility toward them? We believe we have a moral imperative not only to make personal change, but to get America to change.

Rachel Maxwell returned from the Copenhagen Climate Treaty Talks full of energy to send out this message. At the talks, the leaders of undeveloped nations, as the hardest-hit victims of global warming, spoke boldly. European Union nations have already implemented guidelines much stronger than the US is willing to consider. Rachel’s message to us? America is behind. Yet, as the primary producer of carbon dioxide, the world is looking to us to lead the way.

Our political leaders are not bold. But we can be; indeed, we must be bold. We must act now. There is something in climate justice for everyone, whatever your interest or talent. What will YOU do? Call your Senator? Invite friends to your home to see the film Home? Ride your bike more? Stop eating beef? Paint an inspirational poster?

We will organize more education and action opportunities throughout the next year, so be on the lookout! First up is Talking Points for your Senators and “Pledges for our Planet.” But we are also counting on you to listen to your moral calling. Share with us your personal stories of what you are doing, what you wish you were doing, or what inspires you. Send them to ClimateStories@euuc.org. We will publish them in the newsletter, and together we will be the change.
